Bought by Many Urgent Medical Travel Insurance
Bought By Many's plan is European travel insurance for people with a serious medical condition. It pays up to £500,000 for emergency medical treatment only, and so and does not cover other usual travel insurance benefits such as baggage or cancellation. There is a £300 excess.
Urgent medical treatment abroad or repatriation is covered (i.e. hospital or medical costs), but if the customer cancels their trip or cuts it short, for any reason, those costs are not covered. Seagoing cruises are not covered (but river only cruises are) and customers must have a life expectancy of at least six months. Other exclusions are fairly typical for travel insurance.
There are no medical or other health questions, but customers must check with their doctor about their trip and if their doctor is happy for the customer to travel, Bought By Many will insure them.
The policy covers a maximum trip of 28 days and customers must buy the travel insurance within 30 days of their trip. Customers must hold a valid EHIC (European Health Insurance Card) too.
To claim, customers contact Northcott Global Solutions. The policy itself is insured by Great Lakes.
Comment: Many brokers and advisers won’t advise on travel insurance, which is seen as a commodity product – for most people. However, those with a serious medical condition – even if fit to travel – can find getting travel insurance complex, intrusive and expensive.
The oddly named Bought By Many is a FinTech insurer that does things differently and this plan should have a market and its approach of not asking intrusive medical questions will be welcomed by anyone who has tried to get such cover in the past.
It only covers emergency treatment abroad and there are limitations (e.g. no sea cruises) and cover has to be arranged quite soon before travellingFinTech and only if the customer’s GP says it’s OK for them to travel but, if you need this cover, the plan is well worth looking at. We did have problems trying to get a quote online but doubtless that will have been sorted by the time you read this.
Plus points: Travel insurance for those with serious medical conditions; Simple; Easy to buy, with no medical questions or ratings.
Not so plus points: Very limited cover so additional insurance may be required for baggage and cancellation cover; More expensive than cover for people in good health; We had some issues trying to get a quote; Not a market many advisers will know well; The customer must in effect get their GP’s permission to travel.
