Exeter Family Friendly Health Essentials for Me

January 2015 Exeter Family Friendly: PMI

Gold

Exeter Family Friendly has launched an entry-level private medical insurance (PMI) plan for individuals, offering a simple and transparent approach to the sector. The plan covers:

Unlimited inpatient and daypatient treatment.

Post-diagnosis CT, MRI and PET scans.
Outpatient surgery.
Cancer cover. This is not included as standard, but is available at extra cost.
Private ambulance.
Home nursing.
GP helpline.
Parental accommodation with child up to age 18.
NHS cash benefit of £250 a night (max
£250 hospice donation.

There is a compulsory excess of £100 per person per year but customers can increase this up to £1,000 a year (£100, £250 and £500 excesses are also available).

Outpatient treatment is not covered (including for cancer, but excepting surgery) and NICE approved treatments (as being clinically effective) are covered, even if NICE has rejected them on cost-effectiveness grounds.

All treatment outside the UK is excluded, as is all mental and psychological treatment, all emergency treatment, renal dialysis and professional sports injuries, along with other standard exclusions.

Premiums can be discounted for those:

Who do not smoke (10% discount).

Whose BMI is over 18 and under 25 (10% discount).

The plan is available to people aged 18-79 who are UK residents. Children from three months old but under age 21 can be included in their parent’s policy.

Comment: Exeter has a very nice style in its communications, setting out information simply and methodically, and this plan is no exception.

Essentials for Me is a low cost PMI plan for individuals that excludes both cancer cover and outpatient treatment. The former can be added in (but not outpatient cover for that or anything else) and the plan is aimed at people who are happy to fund outpatient costs or to rely on the NHS.

That is a good way to achieve significant and sustainable premium reductions, which can be further increased if you are a non-smoker and/or have a good body mass index (BMI).

It’s good to see a GP helpline covered too – with the current pressures on GPs and hospital A&E this often-overlooked benefit can be invaluable.

Plus points: Low cost PMI cover; Simple; Well set out literature; Cancer cover can be added at extra cost; Good discounts for non-smokers, those with a good BMI and those happy to have a bigger excess.

Not so plus points: No outpatient cover; Cancer cover is not included as standard and costs more if added; £100 automatic excess; Smokers and those with a poor BMI pay more.
