AXA PPP healthcare’s Occupational Health on Demand service is a pay-as-you-go occupational health service for SMEs and mid-sized corporates.

The Occupational Health on Demand (OHOD) service is aimed at companies which may occasionally need the services of occupational health experts to help them manage frequent repeated absences, long-term absences and performance issues relating to ill-health at work.

OHOD is designed to protect the health and wellbeing of the workforce by:

Clients have full control of spend through standardised pricing.

After it has received the employer’s one-page set-up form, AXA PPP sends a welcome letter, fulfilment brochure and two-page contract to formalise the arrangement. Once a signed confirmation is received back, an OHOD account co-ordinator sets up a profile for the client and emails instructions to enable them to log on to the service’s dedicated Workplace Health Gateway referral portal.

Clients are also sent links to video guides explaining how to access the gateway’s assessment and referral services.

Comment: For many larger employers, OH is an integral part of their sickness absence management strategy. However, for many smaller and medium sized enterprises that is still not the case – due to a number of factors including that it may be expensive to set up and that they have little knowledge of how and where it can help (and where it might not).

AXA PPP’s solution is to make OH available on a pay-as-you-go basis, which will make much more sense for many employers. Some intermediaries may argue it’s not insurance and also that it doesn’t pay commission. That’s true, but giving advice is about solutions to problems rather than selling product, and this is a service that may appeal to non-clients too and perhaps lead to sales of other products in due course. Moreover, it can be part of a wider solution that does include insurance products.

Plus points: OH for SMEs on a PAYG basis; AXA PPP is a strong health and wellness brand; Many SMEs have shied away from OH because it was difficult or expensive to set up; Although not an insurance product the service is still a valuable service for intermediaries to add on and can be used with PMI, HCP or GIP clients or clients who have not yet bought any group insurance solutions.

Not so plus points: OH may be unfamiliar territory for many employers and for many intermediaries too; Not a direct earner for intermediaries (unless they charge a fee).
