What was the first record/CD you can remember buying?
Ian Dury, Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick. I distinctly remember taking it home and playing the 7” vinyl on my parents’ stereo and starting a love affair with music that still endures to this day. I’m going to see Loyle Carner (hip hop) next month, before he ‘blows up’ (as they say).

What is your biggest pet hate about the world of financial services?
The constant focus on growing protection market share rather than increasing consumer take-up. Let’s tell everyone who needs protection that they should have it – as and when the need arises – whatever the life and / or work event.

What is your favourite film, and why? (Or book, if you prefer)
I have many, depending on mood. I will, though, choose a horror film – Don’t Look Now. I normally steer clear of this genre, but Nic Roeg’s film is remarkable for creating an increasingly unsettling land and soundscape that creates an apprehension throughout the film, without the need for constant action. Now, it may have helped that a beautiful friend, Roma, who studied film and died far too young, spent many hours explaining the clever filmmaking nuances to me.

What is currently the biggest issue facing intermediaries in the UK market?
Remaining relevant and demanding consumers’ attention in an increasingly connected and time starved world. We need to ensure we are top-of-mind at all work-life events.

If you could change one thing overnight about the protection industry, what would it be?
We need to catch up with other industries. We need to REALLY listen to clients and advisers and innovate around their needs. We need to learn quickly, fail quickly and then succeed quickly.
