There has been wide press coverage recently of the fraudulent “Honduras death claim”. Mr McErlean (the alleged deceased) received a criminal sentence of over six years on 30 September 2011. Although this fraudulent death claim was in manner respects carefully planned with a faked supporting witness statement and official papers, Mr McErlean made the “fatal” (to excuse the pun) mistake of leaving his finger prints on the death certificate! The Insurer’s suspicions were initially aroused when the claimant declined to provide Mr McErlean’s passport during the policy claim verification process. It’s hardly surprising that those of us in and around the protection business don’t think much of consumers. For a start, they’re so lamentably ignorant about our world, it’s almost impossible for us to have a sensible conversation with them. Honestly, many of them can barely grasp the difference between PMI and PHI, for goodness sake. And whenever I try to explain the implications of Solvency II for the annuities market, I find most of them are snoring softly within five minutes.
