Is terminal illness benefit underrated, underutilised, or under-priced? asks Legacare’s Meg Kirby

by ProtectionReview 16/09/15

The Hidden Jewel ………… Is terminal illness benefit underrated, underutilised, or under-priced?  I understand insurers are facing challenges in pricing for terminal illness cover (TI), which has led to questions such as; should it remain part of a life cover product and/or should the length of time for a claim be reduced? Obviously, I can’t comment on whether it is underpriced, but I may be able to shed some light on the consumers’ view about this benefit. Over the last 25 years I have advised life and disability insurers on contentious claims and on drafting insurance products. I know how…

It’s all about the children…says Rachel Noble of Winston’s Wish

by ProtectionReview 24/07/15

I was fortunate to be invited to represent Winston’s Wish (the charity for bereaved children) at the recent Protection Review Conference, on 15 July, at The Landmark Hotel. Gary Shaugnessy, CEO UK Life, Zurich, quoted Winston Churchill in his closing presentation – a quote I am sure you are all familiar with:  “If I had my way, I would write the word ‘insure’ upon the door of every cottage and upon the blotting book of every public man, because I am convinced, for sacrifices so small, families and estates can be protected against catastrophes which would otherwise smash them up…

Why so many NTUs after a counter offer? asks Peter Chadborn, Director and Adviser at Plan Money

by ProtectionReview 02/06/15

A question arose recently as part of a co-presentation I was delivering at The Health & Care Conference  and it related to the high number of applications not taken up when a counter-offer is made to a protection application. It is a question on which my views have been sought by various industry folk over the years, being a practitioner who deals with the application process from initial client engagement through to policy set up. The question takes various forms but basically boils down to ‘why do such a high proportion of counter-offer cases get NTU?’. To understand the possible…

Consolidation and the illusion of choice by Karen Gamble of Health Claims Bureau

by ProtectionReview 20/05/15

Is consolidation good for consumers? This is a question that has been asked many times but always, it seems, big is better. Innocent Drinks, Ben & Jerry’s, Body Shop and Green & Black’s chocolate have all been taken into the larger corporate fold. Did the consumer benefit? Did the money behind these brands allow for innovation, wider distribution and better value for the consumer? In the last month approval has been given for Aviva’s merger with Friends’ Life, AXA PPP has announced the acquisition of Simplyhealth’s medical insurance business and Now Health has bought Best Doctors. Prior to this latest…
